Prices and where to find good accomodation at University in Uganda

For Uganda Christian University, Mukono, there is accomodation around town for between shs. 250,000 and shs. 350,000 a semester. This is available in Buguju and areas behind Casablanca bar and Good Quality Supermarket.

Additionally, a single and self contained room goes for shs. 350,000 a semester and shs. 450,000 for double rooms. This is paid by each person living in a room.
Looking at Kyambogo University, although Banda town is the nearest area around, most of its rentals are in a rather bad shape.

The better option is Kinawataka or Kireka, which are a walkable distance from the university. In case you can afford a taxi fare of about shs. 500, then the suburb of Kireka is the best. In Kireka, a single room goes for about shs. 300,000 per semester. You can share the cost; each contributing shs. 150,000.

This makes it rather affordable, although for some landlords, you have to pay the shs. 300,000 after every three months, regardless of whether it is holiday time or not. These rooms, by the way, are not self- contained and you have to foot the utility bills.

Around Makerere University, Kikoni, Nakulabye, Kasubi, Katanga, Kivuli and Mulago areas, are acceptably habitable. Rental rooms go for about between shs. 100,000 to shs. 150,000 per month for a single room minus utility bills. Rentals that go for shs. 250,000 per month are self contained and closer to the university.

The commonest rental areas around Makerere University Business School (MUBS) are found in Nakawa. Rooms can accomodate about three, four people or even more people; each paying about shs. 150,000 or shs. 200,000.
If this area does not suit you, Mbuya and Bugolobi are the nearest available options although they are more expensive.

For universities on the kabalagala-kasanga route, depending on the location, you will have to part with shs. 350,000 for a single room per semester.

For self-contained rentals; you may part with shs. 800,000 per semester and how you pay for the holiday time is a matter of how best you negotiate with your landlord.
